Mexico – Flooded Caves

Steve prepares for his first training dive and tests out his equipment with the help of expert divers Robbie Schmittner and Bernadette Carrion van Rijn. The team carries double, and sometimes even triple, of everything as they rely solely on their equipment during a cave dive.

Cave diver Bernadette Carrion van Rijn takes Steve on a training dive. They explore a cave known for disorienting even the most expert cave divers because of its haloclines.

Aldo and Steve trek through the jungle and come across a cenote. Cenotes are believed by the Maya to be portals into an underworld called Xibalba.

Steve joins expert underwater cave explorer Robbie Schmittner for his first dive in a cave that has yet to be explored. Robbie will install the guide line for the team to use as they make their way through unmapped waters.

Katy Fraser is an underwater camera operator. In Mexico her role was to shoot Steve underwater in the cave systems of the Yucatan Peninsula.
