Bass-baritone Davóne Tines self-describes — quite accurately — as “a singer and creator”, for this artist is more than just an exceptionally gifted vocalist. These qualities will be evident in his performance on Wednesday, October 14 at the Fortas Chamber Music Concerts of his Recital No. 1: MASS. This is a recital, yes, but also a theatrical work, and a personal and communal exploration of spirituality, history, identity and renewal. Tines has performed it at the Ojai Music Festival in 2022. In this Washington performance, he will be joined by pianist John Bitoy III.
Recital No. 1: MASS is not, strictly speaking, a performance of a musical setting of the Roman Catholic Mass Ordinary, though it does contain elements of that tradition — while invoking many other voices, customs, spiritualities and experiences as well. Johann Sebastian Bach makes an appearance, with one of the most beloved arias from the Saint Matthew Passion; Margaret Bonds and Julius Eastman, Black American composers of the 20th century, are represented; compositions by Tyshawn Sorey and Caroline Shaw will be featured.
The concert will be in the Hammer Auditorium, inside the Flagg Building at the Corcoran School of the Arts & Design.
