Eleanor accepts a job working in the newly create Office of Civil Defense. She sees the opportunity as a way to push forward a New Deal social agenda. She soon ran into stiff resistance from federal bureaucrats and local Southern politicians. Many women also resented her for being “out of her place” as First Lady.
