Joel McCrea plays a big game hunter who is stranded on a mysterious South Seas island. Enter the evil Count Zaroff, and soon the shipwrecked hunter finds himself the prey in this film based on a short story from Richard Connell that also stars Fay Wray.

A gang of criminals, led by the menacing ‘Gruesome’ (Boris Karloff), has found out about a scientist's secret formula for a paralyzing gas that knocks out whoever breathes it. When the criminals later use the gas to rob a bank, the dashing Dick Tracy (Ralph Byrd) is on the case to apprehend the gang.

Tracy (Ralph Byrd) is helped once again by Vitamin Flintheart (Ian Keith) as they investigate the theft of a fortune in fur coats, a possible insurance swindle, and several murders, all linked to “The Claw”, a huge thug who wears a hook in place of his right hand.
