September is Classical Music Month, a fine time to appreciate the art form that gives us enriching, exciting, thoughtful and joyful moments.

It's interesting to ponder the role of Classical Music has played in history and its impact on worldwide culture. In fact, history goes hand-in-hand with Classical music -- much of the repertoire was inspired by political events and movements; spirituality and its practices; delightful events that call for celebration. It remains a pure form of expression that covers the range of human sentiments throughout the ages: the complexities of the Baroque era, the refinement of 18th century Classicism, the emotional, passionate and free structures of the 19th century Romanticism, and the experimentations and expansion of ideas about music and harmonies that grew out of the 20th century. As relevant historically as it is today; an art form that deeply touches our humanity. We take a journey, and learn something new, with each hearing. And although each composition can be studied for its unique formation, we can simply appreciate Classical music for its timeless beauty, a treasure that has stood the test of time.

So indeed it is something to celebrate! As the performance season gets underway this month, musical organizations in the Washington, DC region offer a wealth of resources – symphonic works, chamber music, solo recitals and multi-media exhibitions enhanced by music. And there’s always an abundance of vocal performances, including opera, choral works and vocal recitals. So many opportunities to explore!

And of course, you can count on WETA Classical's commitment to offer Classical music each day, along with our HD channels WETA VivaLaVoce, which celebrates vocal music of all styles and genres, and WETA Virtuoso, which delves deep into all eras of music, from rarely-heard Medieval works to contemporary sounds and old favorites. They are available all day, every day.
