Fanny: The Right to Rock

Co-founded by Filipina American and queer teenagers, Fanny is the first all women band to release an album with a major record label (Warner/Reprise, 1970). Revered by David Bowie, meet the most ground breaking rock group you've never heard of... yet.

Def Leppard lead singer Joe Elliott shows us his vintage flexidisc of Fanny's song "Blind Alley," which he has saved since he discovered the band as a pre-teen. Joe says, "I had no idea who they were, but this four minutes of music, and I was hooked. I would play that thing until literally the needle would've gone through it."

Fanny prepares to record their first album in over 50 years. Jean Millington shows her 1962 Precision bass as "the only thing my son wants to inherit!" Lead guitarist June Millington shares how she swaddles her vintage electric guitar "in my old pajamas... to keep them comfortable." Drummer Brie Darling warms up and shares how the bandmates would carry their own gear and set it up themselves.

The B-52's Kate Pierson says "Fanny was the first band I saw where women were playing guitar. They were great!"
