Grand Central: Breaking Ground

Construction of the new Grand Central began in August 1903. Twenty-five miles of water and sewer lines had to be removed or relocated, and more than three million cubic yards of rock and dirt had to be excavated and hauled away. Two hundred buildings were demolished, and 60 million tons of concrete laid.
