Les vêpres siciliennes is an expressive piece from Giuseppe Verdi's middle period. The drama is drawn from the historical Sicilian Vespers of 1282, in which the island of Sicily rebelled against French rule. Verdi’s first large-scale work was written expressly for the Parisian stage and was later adapted into an Italian version, I vespri siciliani.
