Edward Elgar
Called by the composer a "spiritual drama" rather than an oratorio, Edward Elgar's The Dream of Gerontius is his choral masterpiece. Based on a poem by St. John Henry Newman (pictured), it traces the journey of a soul from death to the afterlife. Adrian Boult conducts a memorable performance.
