Can’t decide what to watch next? We have the solution for you! As WETA’s Vice President of Television Programming, I’m thrilled to introduce you to WETA+, our brand new and easy-to-use streaming service curated with our Washington, D.C. audience in mind.
WETA+ brings viewers the best of PBS – think Great Performances, Antiques Roadshow, Masterpiece dramas and FRONTLINE – along with WETA’s original productions and hundreds of films and series selected for their quality and relevance to the viewers we serve. You can dig into the incredible backstory of the pioneering local FM radio station WHFS 102.3, discover the standout dishes at the region’s best restaurants, and pit your wits against crime with the beloved Belgian detective Hercule Poirot – all from the comfort of your couch.
I’ve worked in public media for more than ten years and I’m continually impressed by the breadth of the public television programming. It has allowed us to see Broadway plays, visit national parks, learn about our nation’s history in all its glorious complexity and access trustworthy, reliable news. It also taught us the art of French cooking (looking at you, Julia Child) and hooked us into the mysteries that befall Midsomer, undoubtedly England’s deadliest county.
What excites me most about this new streaming option is our ability to tailor it to our local audience. We can showcase our WETA productions that focus on food, travel, culture, real estate, the arts and local history – Signature Dish, WETA Arts, If You Lived Here, Get Out of Town and Boundary Stones – along with local films that spotlight people, places and topics important to all of us who call the DC, Maryland and northern Virginia region home. Speaking of which, I highly recommend the documentary Becoming Katharine Graham, a riveting biography of The Washington Post’s pioneering publisher.
In addition, we’ve also partnered with the DC/DOX Festival, NASA, The Atlantic Festival and the Museum of Science (with more to come!) to give our members access to even more video content that will bring them front-row to events taking place in the region and behind-the-scenes of some of the most innovative cultural institutions in the United States.
Whether you’re curious to learn more about the world, or looking for a way to escape it, I invite you to give WETA+ a try and let us know what you think. Thank you for supporting your local public media station!
