July 19: Wintergreen Music - A Trio of Trios, 6PM

Imagine “a piece that embodies the Wintergreen experience,” and look no further than the Horn Trio in E-flat Major by Johannes Brahms! In his trio for horn, piano, and violin, Brahms drew inspiration from his long walks in the Black Forest of Germany. Just as we experience at Wintergreen, his work combines the clarity that nature provides with the musical mastery of musicians, thereby creating one of the most iconic pieces of chamber music ever written. Paired with two more recent pieces – each iconic, vibrant, and descriptive in unique ways – don’t miss this musical journey through “a trio of trios”!

Featuring Festival Artists: Elisabeth Adkins, violin; Elizabeth Vonderheide, violin; Steve Larson, viola; David Bjella, cello; Dee Moses, bass; Eddie Newman, piano; Lance Suzuki, flute; Alexandra Knoll, oboe; Charles Messersmith, clarinet; Aaron Apaza, bassoon; Brandon Nichols, horn

July 21, 23: Wolf Trap - Gounod's Faust

Based on Goethe’s play, Gounod’s opera asks if the freedom of youth is worth an eternity in hell. It is to the aging Faust, who makes a pact with Méphistophélès to exchange his soul for another chance for youth and love. With his youth restored, Faust woos the lovely Marguerite; but Faust soon realizes his salvation is tragically bound to others, including those he loves most.

Gounod’s popular masterpiece explodes with memorable music, arias, trios and gripping scenes which will amaze as only a live performance can.

A free pre-performance lecture will take place one hour before curtain in The Barns.

July 22, 34: Wintergreen Music - Scott Joplin & Aaron Copland…with a Dash of Schubert

Wintergreen Festival Orchestra; Nicholas Hersh, guest conductor; Charlie Messersmith, clarinet

Aaron Copland’s Clarinet Concerto with Wintergreen Music’s own Benny Goodman-in-residence, Charlie Messersmith, paired with musician favorite Schubert Symphony No. 5, shines under the baton of innovative conductor and music arranger, Nicholas Hersh. Arranged by our own guest conductor, Scott Joplin’s Solace: A Mexican Serenade highlights ragtime with a tango infusion. There may even be a surprise musical appearance by Duke Ellington!
