From the stormy waters of Wagner’s Flying Dutchman Overture to the Stalin-era Fifth Symphony by Dmitri Shostakovich, this month’s NSO Showcase runs the emotional and orchestral gamut. Beethoven’s Symphony No.7, characterized by Wagner as “the apotheosis of the dance,” will add a cheerful, exuberant tone to the program. National Symphony Orchestra music director Gianandrea Noseda conducts. This performance of Beethoven’s 7th Symphony comes from the NSO’s recent Beethoven cycle recordings, and the Shostakovich 5th Symphony, an NSO signature work since the days of Mstislav Rostropovich, was an audience favorite during the orchestra’s 2024 European tour.
Tune in to NSO Showcase on Wednesday, February 5 at 9 p.m. on WETA Classical; the program streams all month here.
