Last year, The Thirteen performed Handel's Messiah for the first time. Artistic Director Matthew Robertson has decided to make this an annual holiday tradition, and this year's performances will be on December 20 and 21.
I spoke with Robertson about his thoughts on the storied work as well as the unique qualities The Thirteen brings to their interpretation of it. With the establishment of this new tradition, they are now offering DC residents their only chance to hear Messiah performed locally by a completely professional ensemble, in a manner akin to those of the performances during Handel's lifetime. But Robertson feels that the most important quality these performances offer is: hope.
