February is Black History Month at the Kennedy Center. Check out the Center’s Digital Resources Library to learn about the contributions of Black artists to the history and shaping of America. 

Looking ahead to this month’s highlights: 

The National Symphony Orchestra: 

Feb. 6-8, Stéphane Denève conducts a spirited evening of Russian masterworks, including Mussorgksy’s Pictures at an Exhibition and Khachaturian’s Piano Concerto with guest soloist Jean-Yves Thibaudet

Feb. 20-23, Vasily Petrenko conducts Tchaikovsky’s Manfred Symphony. Cellist Edgar Moreau plays St. Saëns’ passionate First Cello Concerto. 

Feb. 27 & Mar. 1, Marin Alsop conducts Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade. The all-female vocal group Lorelei Ensemble joins the NSO to perform Her Story, Julia Wolfe's large-scale theatrical work incorporating text from throughout the history of women’s fight for equality.

Third Coast Percussion

Feb. 6, Third Coast Percussion “pushes percussion in new directions” according to NPR. The quartet’s visionary approach leads to thrilling new art from unlikely collaborations including work with engineers, architects, and more. 

Feb. 27, Brooklyn-based electronic and indie band Balún brings a Puerto Rican experience to its music  

Renée Fleming Voices at the Terrace Theater: 

 Feb. 12, acclaimed vocalist and songwriter Lizz Wright draws inspiration from her Southern upbringing in Georgia. 

Young Audiences, Family Theater: 

Feb. 22-Mar. 9, The Other Children of the Sun... a superhero adventure for ages 7 plus. Writer and co-director Rhiana Yazzie and Steven Paul Judd, a Kiowa/Choctaw filmmaker and screenwriter offer this funny and thought-provoking world premiere Kennedy Center commission.
