Front Row Washington returns with an echo of Earth Day this past April with the 21st Century Consort and music linked to our planet.

The 21st Century Consort was founded in 1975 and has been one of our area's critically acclaimed ensembles. This performance took place a week after Earth Day 2023 and features music that in one way or another is linked to our planet.

Classical Breakdown returns for Season 5 with an exploration of a popular favorite, Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. Unforgettable melodies, rich harmonies, and technical fireworks encompass this concerto which is also one of the great musical comeback stories! Join us to learn what to listen for as we examine the music, personal letters, and even a recording of the composer himself at the piano.

Choral Showcase

​This weekend's Choral Showcase presents the St. John Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach, from a new Avie recording featuring Nicholas McGegan and Cantata Collective, an ensemble based in San Francisco.

Opera Matinee

Monteverdi’s final opera L’Incoronazione di Poppea, dated 1643.  Poppea, mistress of the Roman emperor Nero, achieves her ambition to be crowned empress. The work is praised for its originality and reflection of the human attributes of its characters. A production of Gran Teatre del Liceu, led by early music specialist Jordi Savall, featuring Julie Fuchs in the title role.

We hear Clara Schumann performed on clarinet, a ferocious performance of Rachmaninoff, and a moving new cello work inspired by the pandemic. We also meet an 18-year-old who loves the euphonium so much that he’s determined to make it a household name and a young woman who is making an impression on the double bass world.
