Choral Showcase

The German Requiem by Johannes Brahms, rightly hailed as a masterpiece, is one of the best-loved choral works of all time. But Brahms also wrote many other choral works of great depth and variety. We'll explore a few on the August 20 Choral Showcase, with sacred motets; Liebeslieder, or "Love Song" waltzes; a few songs for women's choir; and the Schicksalslied, or "Song of Destiny," for chorus and orchestra. Another shorter work, the Geistliches Lied, Op. 30, is, much like the German Requiem, a work of profound solace and consolation.

Opera Matinee

Opera Matinee presents Brittne's Turn of the Screw. Britten's mysterious and chilling ghost story-turned-opera of a household haunted by previous caregivers.  Based on a novella by Henry James, the 1954 opera is made up of 16 short episodes, each prefaced by a variation of Britten's main theme.  A production of Budapest Festival Orchestra, led by Iván Fischer.
