Reports to: Producer, Student Reporting Labs and Director of Operations and Development

Staus: Part -Time, Non - Exempt

Hourly Rate: $18.00

POSITION OVERVIEW:

PBS News Student Reporting Labs (SRL) is a hands-on journalism training program that connects young people to real-world experiences and educators to resources and community. SRL is seeking our first Podcasting Intern to support our flagship audio project, “On Our Minds,” a teen mental health and life podcast entering its fifth season this winter. The Podcasting Intern will be an integral part of the SRL team and have opportunities to develop content, brainstorm ideas, and support department projects while developing storytelling and audio production skills. We are looking for a strong audio editor interested in supporting student voice and learning more about collaborative podcast production. Candidates must be active college students.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Producing and editing audio content on a need basis, including supporting Season 5 of SRL’s Murrow Award-winning podcast, “On Our Minds”
  • Collaborating working with SRL Staff to brainstorm and support new ideas, projects and goal
  • Supporting systems internally by tracking in an Editorial Calendar and AirTable
  • Assisting with related special projects or other duties as assigned

DESIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Preferred Major: Journalism, media, communications, or related discipline.

  • Skill development: Gain practical experience while acquiring knowledge within the field of communication, journalism, and public broadcasting
  • Understanding real-world application: Develop a greater understanding about reporting and podcasting, and how the interdisciplinary work of audio production is a powerful way for young people to learn and civically engaged
  • Personal Professional Development: Grow production skills and learn new systems while working in a in a professional environment to support the development of project-based learning resources
  • Portfolio building: Contribute to published content projects and receive production credits

Additional Skills and Qualifications:

  • Experience in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Adobe Audition
  • Extensive experience recording and editing audio, and/or podcasting
  • Preferred: video editing, including proficiency with Adobe Premiere
  • Demonstrated the ability to work effectively, both independently and in a team environment
  • Overall tech savvy skills: you feel comfortable and are open to using Zoom, Google Drive, Slack, AirTable, Canva and other programs
  • Great interpersonal and communication skills
  • Curiosity and enthusiasm for journalism, youth engagement and public broadcasting media

LOCATION

WETA and NewsHour Productions are Washington, DC established media and news organizations. We are a largely local workforce based out of the Campbell Place office in Arlington, VA. WETA and NewsHour Productions value employee flexibility when possible. Most positions based in our Arlington, VA office will be onsite or hybrid, depending upon the role.
