Title : News Producer, News, PBS News Weekend

Status : Full Time, Exempt

Reports to: Executive Producer, Weekend

JOB OBJECTIVE:

As the Lead News Producer for our Weekend broadcast, you’ll be an integral part of our team. Working with the Executive Producer, Senior Producer and anchor, you will help decide what stories we report on. You will write copy and prepare any graphics or video elements that go along with that story. You will pitch stories that could be included in the news summary, and work with a correspondent, production assistant and an editor. You will also produce day-of-air tape packages. You’ll assist other producers when needed and work with more junior producing staff to mentor and teach them. You will be encouraged to develop future segments for the broadcast and will produce them from pitch to air, including field shoots as needed and gathering other media elements. You will coordinate breaking news with the digital Weekend team to ensure multi-platform coverage is well coordinated.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Perform related special projects or other duties as assigned.

SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Experience covering news, foreign and domestic, and ideally, also politics at a national level.
  • Experience writing news copy.
  • Ability to multi-task and juggle multiple deadlines; experience working in a fast-paced environment with responsibilities that can change quickly.
  • Ability to develop story ideas into well organized pitches, plan shooting and other elements and work to deliver the story to air in coordination with senior management, correspondent and broadcast editor.
  • Excellent organizational, project planning and follow-through, presentation and time management skills.
  • Availability to work a non-standard or extended work schedule as news requires.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum three (3) years’ experience producing original news content with preferred experience at a national outlet.
  • College degree.
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LOCATION

WETA and NewsHour Productions are Washington, DC established media and news organizations. We are a largely local workforce based out of the Campbell Place office in Arlington, VA. WETA and NewsHour Productions value employee flexibility when possible. Most positions based in our Arlington, VA office will be onsite or hybrid, depending upon the role.
