Black trans activists push their stories this Pride Month

June is Pride Month, the anniversary of the 1969 riots by the LGBTQ community against police brutality at New York City’s Stonewall Inn. Now, with a recent wave of violence against black, transgender people, activists are demanding those stories be centered in the “Black Lives Matter” movement. NewsHour Weekend's Ivette Feliciano spoke with Imara Jones, creator of Translash Media, to learn more.

    New numbers from the U.S. Labor Department Friday surprised economists when the jobless rate dropped from 14.7 percent in April to 13.3 percent in May. But there was a note on the official report called a “misclassification error” that makes last month’s unemployment rate up to three points higher. The Wall Street Journal’s chief economics commentator Greg Ip joins Hari Sreenivasan to explain.

    The threat of a pandemic did not keep New Yorkers home as protesters across the city took to the streets chanting “Black Lives Matter” calling for several police reforms. Largely peaceful, several demonstrators defied the city’s 8 P.M. curfew. Protests continued Saturday. NewsHour Weekend’s Christopher Booker reports on what protesters would like to see changed.
