Five Years North

FIVE YEARS NORTH is the story of America's immigration system through the eyes of Luis and Judy. Luis is an undocumented Guatemalan boy who arrives alone in New York City with little support and many responsibilities. Judy is a veteran ICE agent with Cuban American and Puerto Rican roots, who must weigh the human cost of her work against the future her family would face without her paycheck.

New York City is many things to many people. For Luis, who is in the U.S. for the first time, the city will represent both hope and struggle for the 16-year-old whose only home was a small village in Guatemala.

Undocumented teenager Luis has the weight of the world and his family on his shoulders: he is expected to attend school, work to pay off his debt and find a way to remain in the U.S. with little to no support.

Between work and school, Luis is feeling the pressure of having to succeed for the sake of his family and a future he sees for himself. Can he manage both and care for his own mental health?

A man's past mistake puts him on the radar of Judy and her ICE team. But what they don't know is who Ernest is - a devoted husband, father and neighbor - and how this arrest will affect his family.

Ernest's arrest shows that the courts don't always abide by the same laws. How can the judicial system recognize its differences so that ICE can do their job effectively without unnecessary harm?
