Researching George Washington’s Religious Convictions

Morrison House Presents: Mary V. Thompson, Research Historian, Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association
George Washington’s 19th-century biographers depicted our first president as a deeply religious, even pietistic person. That view began to shift in the 20th century, and for several decades Washington was described as a deist. At this month’s salon-style discussion Mount Vernon Research Historian Mary Thompson will talk about George Washington’s disputed religious values and share how she formulated a sense of his convictions through research using the assembled primary documents at Mount Vernon Estate.
