Learn how the rebellious bomba and the defiant plena music styles have been used as tools to uplift people’s spirits during challenging times.

About Cultura Plenera

Cultura Plenera is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion and education of bomba and plena in Maryland, Washington D.C., and Virginia. Bombais a Puerto Rican musical genre that dates back more than 300 years and has heavy African influences. Bomba expresses the sensibilities of Puerto Ricans and their culture. Plena is another Puerto Rican musical genre, which dates back more than 100 years, and is played with hand-drums in a call and response format that also narrates stories of the Puerto Rican experience.
