Opera Lafayette performs Beethoven's Leonore

Ryan Brown

Beethoven only wrote one opera, but he spent a full decade working on it, producing three distinct versions (1805, 1806 and 1814), four overtures, and two titles, Leonore and Fidelio. To celebrate the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth and the 25th anniversary of Opera Lafayette, the company will present their largest-scale production to date and their first German opera when they perform the original 1805 version at The Kennedy Center Eisenhower Theater on February 26, a performance which will be recorded for release on the Naxos label. James Jacobs talks to Opera Lafayette's founder and artistic director Ryan Brown about the opera, this production, and Beethoven's legacy.
