Founded in 1961, WETA is the leading public broadcasting station in Washington, DC. Throughout our sixty-year history, WETA continues to expand our educational, cultural, news and public affairs impact through television programming, streaming, news, radio, student journalism, and community programs.

As a PBS and NPR member, WETA provides local and national television programs and services. WETA has been part of the production of the PBS NewsHour (first named “The Robert MacNeil Report” and then “The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer”) since its creation in 1973. PBS NewsHour is recognized globally for bringing balanced, in-depth news coverage to all through our nightly, one-hour broadcast reaching more than 300 PBS stations and 98 percent of the nation’s television households. Washington Week is our highly acclaimed weekly roundtable broadcast discussing current events with Washington, DC based journalists. With a continued focus on balanced journalism, PBS NewsHour sponsors the PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Labs connecting students with a network of public broadcasting mentors and an innovative journalism curriculum. WETA Classical Radio was founded in 1970 and provides commercial free classical music locally through its FM stations and globally via streaming.


The Chief Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Officer is a leader, advisor, advocate, catalyst for change, and institutional resource focused on influencing diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) across all programs and activities throughout WETA and NewsHour Productions. The Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer is a member of the executive leadership team who will champion DEI actions that impact policies, work culture, programming, talent, marketing, and business decisions.


DEI Strategy & Policy

  • Provide vision, leadership, and counsel on matters of organizational DEI initiatives including; strategic planning, policy development, recruiting and retention, training, education, community relations, policy development, programs, and communications.
  • Inform and advise WETA and NewsHour Production’s leadership on perspective, best practices, policies, resources and initiatives that can execute the diversity agenda and support a workplace that is inclusive and equitable.
  • Partner with organization leaders to develop DEI focused strategic initiatives, metrics and reporting.
  • Keep current on diversity and inclusion developments, opportunities, and metrics/trends and use that knowledge to develop and implement diversity and inclusion goals and direction.

Promote DEI in the Workplace

  • With the COO, lead the activities of the DEI Council, including establishing council charter, developing agendas, facilitating meetings, and directing work. Periodically, assess the Council’s effectiveness relative to chartered responsibilities, challenges and barriers encountered during the period, and recommendations for solutions.
  • Own the collaboration between and with internal Employee Resource Groups, spearheading the development and growth of the groups and their sponsors to ensure lasting business and social impact.
  • Coach leaders and managers on best practices to help foster a company climate that respects and values DEI among employees by building community, continually developing our culture, and meeting the needs of varied abilities and learning approaches of employees.
  • Build relationships with external partners (e.g., universities, associations, advocacy groups) to research and implement custom and effective diversity and inclusion initiatives.
  • Partner with Human Resources to ensure talent strategies align with DEI strategies.
  • Partner with cross-functional business teams to ensure DEI focus for content, programs, community outreach, audience development, educational materials, and outreach.
  • Lead internal communication strategies to promote internal and external diversity and inclusion activities, events, and progress. Partner with external communication team for external WETA and NewsHour Productions DEI promotions.
  • Create annual DEI Report for Board, internal and external use highlighting areas of progress and areas of continued development.


  • Strong understanding of benchmarks, leading practices, and innovations in diversity, equity and inclusion as well as the strengths and drawbacks of what has been tried in the past.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to track data, develop reports, and present metrics.
  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to represent ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Experience converting passion to action with an understanding of how to influence organizational and systemic change.
  • Excellent leadership and motivational skills.
  • Experience working in a highly collaborative environment in support of business objectives.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion in establishing and maintaining good working relationships and to coach managers and employees.
  • Proficient in MS Outlook, TEAMS, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize work.


  • Bachelor’s degree or relevant work experience in a related field.
  • 10+ years’ experience designing, developing, and leading the execution of measurable and scalable diversity, equity and inclusion programs, solutions, and initiatives within a corporate environment.


WETA and NewsHour Productions are Washington, DC established media and news organizations. We are a largely local workforce based out of the Campbell Place office in Arlington, VA. WETA and NewsHour Productions value employee flexibility. Most positions based in our Arlington, VA office will be onsite or hybrid, depending upon the role.
