Front Row Washington
Join us for a performance of contemporary music by Jessie Montgomery, Hannah Kendall, Mikhail Johnson, Tania Leon, Jon Deak and more! Founded in 1975 as the 20th Century Consort, the group became the resident ensemble for contemporary music at the Smithsonian Institution’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in 1978. In its annual series at the Hirshhorn, the Consort presented finely balanced concerts frequently related to the museum’s exhibitions, featuring music by living composers – often world premieres – along with 20th century classics. In 1990, the Consort was awarded the Smithsonian Institution’s Smithson Medal in honor of their long, successful association.
Choral Showcase
Handel's beloved Messiah was actually written for Easter, and following a successful fundraiser for London's Foundling Hospital in 1750, it became an annual event, the composer conducting subsequent performances for the remainder of his life. Our performance comes from 2017, with conductor Jordi Savall and Le Concert des Nations.
Opera Matinee
Verdi's moving Requiem, a monumental masterpiece, is one of the repertoire's outstanding showcases of vocal, choral and orchestral writing. In this performance from September 2023, the Metropolitan Opera chorus, orchestra and master singers combine forces, under the direction of Yannick Nézet-Séguin.
