We Are Almost There!

Elections are now upon us. I’m sure the negative ads will pick up pace in this last stretch to the finish, and I can only hope that they don’t turn you off from going out to your polling station. This election is particularly important, as Democrats have a real opportunity to take over Congress. By several polls, the House is in the bag already and the Senate is still well within reach. Here in Virginia, we have a hotly contested Senatorial race (Allen/Webb), closely watched by the whole nation.

Have you gone to any of the political rallies during the cycle? Specially if you are part of an ethnic group, did you feel that the candidates addressed you personally or did you feel disenfranchised and ignored? You might have noticed that some Democrat African American leaders in Prince Georges County are endorsing Michael Steele over Ben Cardin in Maryland’s Senate race. Do you agree that Democrats need to pay closer attention to Black issues? Or Latino, Asian, Muslim? Do you think the Republicans are doing a better or worse job?

With the election this close, have you decided who you are going to vote in all your local races? Are you getting calls from the candidates at your home? Do they annoy you or do you like the personal touch? If you live and can vote in Virginia, how will you vote on the marriage amendment? If you are a registered Independent, are you voting along a party line on Tuesday? Share your pre-election excitement or apprehension. It will make you feel better.

My name is Woineshet, and I am writing from Georgetown University.

I just want to comment on VA elections.
I am an Ethiopian American who is very glad to be a part of this democratic process. I volunteer as an election officer both in local and presidential elections and this is the first time seeing so much energy and motivation to vote among Ethiopian Americans who live in Northern Virginia. As you know, N. VA is home for thousands and thousands of Ethiopian immigrants (it is second largest) ethnic group in the area. Obviously, resonate with this group of voters is issues like immigration, minimum wage, etc. I am so proud that they are taking this chance to voice their concerns and wishes.

    Thanks
