A memoir from "The Wild Woman of Butte"...Vivaldi's Gloria written for a girl's orphanage in Venice...a meditation on the Paris and San Bernardino massacres by Aaron Jay Kernis...the beautiful young voices of the San Francisco Girls Chorus blending with the innovative chamber orchestra, The Knights. This program is part of SHIFT, a new initiative celebrating American orchestras, presented by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and Washington Performing Arts. Classical WETA's Nicole Lacroix spoke with The Knights' co-founder and conductor, Eric Jacobsen about their Kennedy Center debut concert on April 1st, which celebrates music written for and performed by women. The SHIFT festival also features an outreach component with residency programs and advocacy on Capitol Hill. Jacobsen discusses his passion for inspiring young musicians, and the importance of nurturing art, which he calls "food for the soul."
