Converter Boxes & Coupons
If you wish to keep using your analog TV set and do not wish to subscribe to a pay TV service after February 17, 2009, you'll need to purchase a digital TV converter box.
The box converts digital signals into a traditional analog signal. It plugs into your TV set (and you'll still use your antenna). The converter box comes with installation instructions.

Where can I get a converter box?
Converter boxes are now available for sale at electronic retailers. You can find a local store by checking www.dtv2009.gov. The converter boxes are also available for purchase online at dtv.bsat.net.
What is the cost of a converter box?
The converter boxes cost $40-$80 each. The federal government is offering coupons to subsidize the cost of the boxes. Each household can receive up to two coupons, each worth $40, that can be applied toward the cost of eligible converter boxes. Only one coupon may be used per box. The government coupons will be available while supplies last until March 31, 2009. The coupons expire within 90 days of being mailed. Redemption instructions are provided with the coupons.
How can I obtain a government coupon for a converter box?
Through March 31, 2009, you can request a coupon while supplies last in one of four ways:
- Apply online at www.dtv2009.gov
- Call the coupon program 24-hour hotline: 1-888-DTV-2009 (1-888-388-2009). Hearing-impaired consumers can use the TTY service by calling: 1-877-530-2634 (English/TTY) or 1-866-495-1161 (Spanish/TTY)
- Mail a coupon application to: PO Box 2000, Portland, OR 97208-2000. Download a coupon application here.
- Fax a coupon application to 1-877-DTV-4ME2 (1-877-388-4632)
How many converter boxes do I need?
The ratio is always 1:1 — one converter box to one analog TV that isn't connected to a pay TV service. Every set that requires an antenna to get a TV signal today and does not have a digital tuner will require a converter box to get a TV signal in February 2009.
