Event Recap: Tribute to World War II Veterans

National Mall, Washington, DC

Saturday, September 29, 2007

Members of the community, along with WETA, Friends of the National World War II Memorial, and the U.S. Army Freedom Team Salute program, joined together on the grounds of the National Mall near the World War II Memorial to pay tribute to the veterans of World War II.

The event began with a ceremony honoring the service of WWII veterans, followed by remarks from Sharon Percy Rockefeller, President and CEO of WETA, Rolland Kidder, Executive Director of Friends of the National World War II Memorial, and filmmakers Ken Burns and Lynn Novick. A screening followed, with film segments from the last episodes of THE WAR, the PBS documentary about WWII directed and produced by Burns and Novick and co-produced by WETA. The event included a color guard presentation by the Joint Armed Forces Color Guard of the Military District of Washington and music by the Quantico Marine Corps Band.
