The National Chamber Players have been the resident chamber ensemble at Episcopal High School since 2004. Made up of members of the National Symphony Orchestra and other prominent artists and under the artistic direction of N.S.O. cellist James Lee, the National Chamber Players perform four concerts per year in the Ainslie Arts Center's Pendleton Hall. The concerts, featuring ensembles ranging from solo instruments to chamber orchestra, are appreciated by the school community, critics, and a devoted following for their innovative and balanced programs and their virtuoso performances.
Classical Breakdown
Real and fictional characters come to life in Robert Schumann's Carnaval, an incredibly challenging work for piano that also includes musical puzzles. John Banther and Linda Carducci explore all the characters and how Schumann depicts them in music, the ciphers, discarded movements, and more. plus we enjoy a full performance of it by Sergei Rachmaninoff!
Opera Matinee
The Hours, Kevin Puts's heart-wrenching drama of three women from different eras whose lives are connected through Virginia Woolf’s novel Mrs. Dalloway, is presented live, a repeat performance from its Metropolitan Opera premiere last season. Starring Renée Fleming, Joyce DiDonato and Kelli O'Hara.
Choral Showcase
Music for Trinity on Choral Showcase, beginning with John Taverner's masterwork from the 16th-century: the Missa Gloria Tibi Trinitas, for the Feast of the Holy Trinity. And from Finnish composer Jaako Mantyjarvi, the Trinity Service, written in 2019 for (and performed by) The Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge.
